Changes in Writing

October 7, 2007

When is the last time you bought stationary and a stamp, wrote a letter, and then sent the letter to someone through the mail? For me, it’s been a very long time. With the use of technology and the Internet, I can send emails in order to communicate in a much faster and more convenient way. For example,  I am  able to keep in touch with friends and relatives who live great distances away from me through email. On a positive note, this change in writing has helped me increase my communication with friends, family, and educators.

In the education world, writing is also changing with use of technology and the Internet. Teachers are using Blogs in order for students to communicate their ideas. Will Richardson says, “Students can write about personal reactions to topics covered in class, post links, write reflectively, and summarize on annotate readings.”  Instead of using the traditional paper and pencil for journaling and free writing, they can use Blogs to do so.   The possibilities truly are endless.

This site is a great resource for teachers who are looking for ways to use technology with their students in order to improve writing skills.

Teachers Having Websites

October 1, 2007

It is becoming common for teachers of various subjects and grade levels to have professional websites. In Frederick County, Maryland, teachers are required to create and maintain a professional website. In my opinion, it is another great way for teachers to communicate with parents and students. There are benefits for parents, students, and teachers alike.

Benefits for Students and Parent:

Parents and Students are able to get information quickly about homework, test, and upcoming classroom events.  They can access classroom schedules and they can get to know the teacher, if he/she has include a biography.

Benefits for Teachers:

Parents have access to the teacher’s website, therefore, they can help students stay organized and prepared for school. Parents will also know the teacher’s expectations. This could also eliminate time spent on other forms of communication, such as phone calls and emails. Lastly, teachers can view other educators websites to share ideas, reflect, and collaborate.

What is a Blog?

September 27, 2007

Wikipedia defines a blog as, “A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log or weblog) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles, most often in reverse chronological order.” In other words, Webloging or Blogging is a way for people to communicate their ideas through reflection, discussion, and/or debate.  It gives those who are less vocal a chance to express themselves without feeling threatened.  It can be used for educational and/or recreational use.

“This notion of self-publishing, which is what Blogger and blogging are really about is the next big wave of human communication. The last big wave was Web activity. “  Eric Schmidt
